Christmas Message from our President

2020 has been a year that will be remembered. We will all have been touched by Coronavirus to some degree; I am sure that there are many of you who have endured separation from loved ones, felt a sense of isolation during lockdown or maybe have sadly lost friends or colleagues. My heart goes out to you if this is the case. With the news that the vaccination programme has started today, we have turned a corner and I do genuinely think that we can have a more optimistic view of what 2021 will bring.

Against this background, there have been numerous positives: clap for carers fostering a feeling of pride for all that our NHS has delivered, a reawakened British spirit that Col Sir Tom Moore epitomises, a greater feeling amongst neighbours to look out for each other and less carbon emissions from fewer journeys to name but a few. I add to this list the resilience shown by the Sussex ACF leadership team and their determination to resume as close to normal contact with cadets as had been allowed. For some cadets, this will have been a constant thread in turbulent times and the positive impact that will have had on these young lives cannot be underestimated. How to lead effectively in a virtual manner has become a new skill that many of us have had to develop and has become the subject of much research and written papers. Few would argue that it is an easy ask and I give all credit and my deepest thanks to the Commandant and his team for their fantastic achievements this year. I also thank the Association members for their continued support and contributions.

This will be a very different Christmas but I hope that each and every one of you is able to celebrate, even if it is on a much smaller scale than normal. I wish your families and you a wonderful festive season. As this challenging year draws to a close, I hope we can focus on the many successes buried within 2020. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all!

Brigadier I A Rolland.

5 (Hayward Heath) Remembrance Parade

Congratulations to all the cadets of 5 (Haywards Heath) Sussex Army Cadets for their participation in Remembrance Parade.

A fantastic evening entirely planned by their senior bubble.

"A big thank you to everyone that attended last night's Remembrance Parade, it was a fitting tribute to those that have gone before us.

I hope you all went away with greater understanding of the significance of the event and how much it means to everyone in the ACF.

An extra special thanks to those that offered a poignant reading, LCpl Green, LCpl Oakley,Cdt Neild and of course Cdt Chapman for guarding the flag.

It is unfortunate and sad that we cannot attend the town Remembrance Parade, however we can do our part in the Move to Remember challenge that our Detachment Commander, SSI Sandiford has set out for us,

We look forward to completing it with the enthusiasm that you all have, both for the RBL and ACF alike"

The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service is awarded to Sussex ACF

Today the 2nd June 2020 Sussex Army Cadet Force (ACF) has been given the distinction of being awarded with the Queens Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS).

The QAVS is the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work done in their own communities by their volunteers. It was created in 2002 to celebrate the anniversary of The Queen's coronation and is viewed akin to an MBE for Voluntary Groups.

The award is earned by continuously undertaking outstanding voluntary work that provides social, economic and environmental services for local communities whilst also recognising the organisations standing within those communities. Sussex ACF has 820 cadets and 194 adult volunteers at 25 locations across Sussex.

The Commandant, Colonel David Steele stated, “This is a wonderful acknowledgement of the hard work, commitment, professionalism and dedication of the adult volunteers, of Sussex ACF, by providing unique life-skills training and challenging activities for young people throughout Sussex”

The award will be presented to Sussex ACF by the Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex, Mrs Susan Pyper on behalf of Her Majesty later in the Autumn this year. Sussex ACF, with its motto ‘To Inspire to Achieve’, is always seeking new adult volunteers to continue its success, if you’re keen to know more look Sussex ACF by click on About Sussex ACF or e-mail on sussexrecruitment@rfca.org.uk
